Our Intentions

The purpose of this retreat is to offer space, a safe container, and supportive tools for each person to understand how to use the motivational power of needs to create what we want in our lives.

What has been holding us back? What are our blind spots? What needs do we favor and which needs do we ignore?

We use the Balanced Needs Circle as a guide and look at our lives (past and present) through this lens.

The Village Dances allow us to actually experience how these needs feel when they are fully expressed. We use the dances to go more deeply into each set of needs, and we also dance to the needs in balance. We use some other kinesthetic balancing tools as a way of supporting the body. These balances are from Brain Gyms and bring electromagnetic balance within the body, opening up neural pathways between the prefrontal cortex (intellect) and other specific areas of the brain that control body responses; these balances are reflected in the dances. The Brain Gym balances are something you can take with you and do each day.

INDIVIDUATION

Individuation is about knowing myself and taking responsibility to take care of myself, whatever that takes.

Choice
Respect
Discovery
Space, solitude
Identity
Personal responsibility
Taking care of self
Emotional safety
Physical safety
Survival
Thriving
Do what nourishes me
To be valued
Judgment
(it does or doesn't work for me)

COMMUNITY

Community is about engaging with others, knowing that I matter, and finding where I fit.

Relationship
Support
Guidance
Trust
Inclusion
Partnership
Belonging
Tribe
Companionship
Participation
Shared Values
Restoration of Trust
Closeness
Warmth
Caring
Gentleness
Comfort, Solace
Intimacy

When these sets of needs are balanced, we have security and trust. We are valued both by ourselves and by others. We can turn to others for support or guidance and we can also take care of ourselves. We have a clear sense of who we are and how we relate with others.

ORDER

Order is about fitting things together and putting things in their place. It is about finding a structure that relates each part to the other parts.

Structure
Purpose
Meaning
Congruence
Consistency
Reliability
Commitment
Next steps / sequence
Closure
Completion
Integrity

CHAOS

Chaos is about accepting what is and not trying to change it.

Possibility
Flexibility
Spontaneity
Intuition
Non-attachment
Discernment
Inspiration
Hope
Big picture
Vision
Diversity
Patterns
Spiritual Communion
Trust in Divine Power

When these two need clusters are in balance, we have clarity and confidence. We have the big picture, and we also see the next steps. We understand how things fit together, we have trust as we move forward and we can accept whatever happens. We see the beauty in each piece and we discern how they each contribute to the whole.

FOCUS

Focus is about showing up and welcoming others to show up. It includes welcoming myself when others don't. It is both quiet and expressive and involves creating awareness and familiarity.

Availability
Presence
Acknowledgement
Being Real
Expressing
Celebration
Mourning
Hearing
Being heard
Awareness
Visibility
Communication with or w/o words

EXPANSION

Expansion is about making a difference; having the experience and skills to get the job done. It is often stimulating and involves a willingness to go into the unfamiliar.

Action
Adventure
Stimulation
Challenge
Proficiency
Fun, Play
Growth
Sensory Stimulation
Impact my environment
Accomplishment
Creativity
Legacy
Contribution
Fluidity/Flow
Making a difference

When these two clusters of needs are in balance, there is wisdom and effectiveness. We are clear about what is important to us, where to begin, and we take action. We are aware of others and tuned to constant changes; we can guide and participate in the flow of life.

BALANCE
Equal regard / Equal value
Wholeness
Mutuality
Serenity
Equanimity
Fairness
Ease
Energy
PEACE!!

When all three sets of needs are in balance, we have peace! We can relax and we also experience an increased flow of energy. We don't favor one set of needs above other; we hold them all in equal regard. Likewise, we value the needs of others and our own needs equally ~ not giving up what we need for others and not asking them to give up their needs either. We find ways to meet all of our needs and we co-create solutions with others so we are all satisfied. This allows us to access the creativity and vision of others and we contribute from our experience and personality.
